Academics & Programs

Welcome to Physical Education at Scales! As a program, we will strive to grow your students’ motor and spatial awareness skills, cooperative skills, fitness level, and present your children with activities and games that they can do for their entire life.

This year, we will offer units where parents are able to join in on the fun: archery (third-fifth), cosmic bowling (Kindergarten-Fifth grades), and field day (Kindergarten-Fifth grades).

We also offer Fall Run Team and Spring Run Team in the mornings to all students at Scales.

Scales students visit the library as part of the Special Class rotation.  Students may checkout the following number of books per grade level:

• Kindergarten-one book
• First and Second grade-two books
• Third-Fifth Grades-three books

As part of their library visit they will, also, receive library instruction.

Students have daily access to the library where they may return or renew their books and checkout new ones.  Books may be renewed one time and then must be returned for others to enjoy.

There is not a fine for overdue books.  If a student has an overdue book, checkout privileges may be denied until the book is returned.  Books that have not surfaced in 30 days are presumed to be lost.  A bill with the cost of the book will be sent home.  If the book is found and returned we will issue a refund.  Books damaged while checked out to a student will be assessed by the librarian to determine whether repairs can be made.  A damage bill with replacement costs will be sent home for books damaged beyond repair.

The Visual Art Program at Scales Elementary is designed around the Scope and Sequence created by WCS Art Educators, which is based on the Tennessee Visual Art Standards. Students will build a strong foundation in the visual arts using the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design as a guide for observing and creating art. Additionally, students will learn through the study of Art History, Art Criticism, and Art Production. Most importantly, Art is a place for students to express their creativity and solve problems using a variety of higher order thinking skill sets: Analyzing, Evaluating, and Creating.

Student artwork is on display throughout the year outside of the art room. Also, there is a school wide art show featuring the artwork of every student once a year. Lastly, every student is encouraged to create a digital portfolio of their artwork using Artsonia. This enables the student to share their artwork with their family and friends and gives them a sense of pride and ownership in what they create.

The music program at Scales is based on the Kodály Approach to Music Education.  Zoltán Kodály, 1882-1867, was a Hungarian composer, ethnomusicologist and educator.  The hallmarks of the approach that bears his name are 1. Folk song and high-quality compositions 2. Beautiful, healthy singing 3. The musical tools of solfege, rhythm syllables and hand signs 4. The development of true musical literacy, the ability to read and think music in one’s mind.

Our classes meet once during the six day cycle for 45 minutes.  A typical lesson includes vocal warm ups, review of repertoire, songs and games to prepare a new rhythm, pitch or concept, a movement activity or dance, and songs to practice a musical skills and concepts.  Students in grades third-fifth play the recorder, and all grade levels have opportunities to incorporate classroom instruments to our songs.

Beyond the school day, fourth and fifth graders will have the opportunity to participate in chorus.  The chorus will present one or two concerts each year.  There are also opportunities to sing in a spring musical or talent show.  If you’d like to know more about music at Scales, please get in touch with Eric Sennett.

What is Safety Patrol? Safety Patrol is a group of students (typically 6-7 in a rotation) who assist car riders during morning arrival to make it as efficient as possible. The safety patrol members will help open car doors, assist kids out of their car, say, “good morning” and close the door. One of the responsibilities of being a 5th grader at SES is to help students get into the building safely at arrival.

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle! The Green Team at Scales is comprised of responsible students who are committed to keeping their community clean through recycling efforts. Members of the Green Team ensure that recyclable materials are transported from classrooms to be collected by Williamson County Recycling, which in turn raises money for our school.  The Green Team also meets occasionally after school to discuss recycling in our communities and to brainstorm additional ways we might help keep our communities Green. Come be a part of the Green team!

Mini Mu Academy is the math team that we have at Scales. This group is made up of 30 top mathematicians in grades 4 and 5 who compete against other students in WCS sponsored by Brentwood High School’s Mu Alpha Theta. They meet during the months of October- December to help prepare for this competition.

Scales Music Makers is a club for students in grades 3/4/5 that meets once a week before school.  We mostly sing, but we also have some students accompanying on piano, guitar, ukulele, drums and violin.  We give several evening performances throughout the school year.  In recent years, we have also sung with the Brentwood Middle and High School Choirs.
